Forever.
"Yes."
It was that word, that one, short, meaningless word, that broke her heart in two.
"Don't do this…" she whispered. "You can't. James. Don't… Please."
His hazel eyes were not as she was used to seeing them; not teasing, mocking, gentle, or even loving. They were just hard.
Hard, as he watched his wife's face twist in distress. Hard as her pleas fell upon deaf ears. And hard as he looked around his house for what could very possibly be the last time.
"James…" she whispered.
"I said yes. I'm going, Lily. I have to." A spark of compassion slowly crept into his features, and he pulled the young woman into his arms.
"Then let me come."
